WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden lauded the sacrifice of generations of U.S. troops who “dared all and gave all” fighting for their country and called on Americans to ensure their “sacrifice was not in vain” in Memorial Day observances at Arlington National Cemetery.Biden was joined at the traditional wreath-laying ceremony by first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff, for the 155th National Memorial Day Observance. Officials believe an object that was seen hanging from then flying off of a wind turbine on Deer Island may have been the result of strong winds and a broken braking mechanism.The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority said emergency crews and staff were on-site Monday morning after a passerby noticed that one of the two wind turbines at the Deer Island Treatment Plan had “something hanging from one of the blades.” A witness told 7NEWS it was around 10:15 a.m. when they were travelling near the turbine and heard a noise that caused them to look up and see the object. A piece later flew off of the turbine, in what a witness described as a scene straight out of “Final Destination,” as they weren’t sure where it would land.No injuries were reported and the public access area near the turbines was soon closed off as the MWRA, police and firefighters responded to the scene. A couple and their pets have been on a meaningful journey for a cause, walking from Maine all the way down the east coast to Florida to help empower children.7NEWS caught up with Matt and Grace Grooms as they made their way through Marblehead with their pups Foxi and Nemo in tow. The couple is taking on their second walk across America, pushing along their trusty jogging stroller, dubbed “Timmy.”“Timmy’s a beast – he holds all of our camping gear, water, food, stuff for the dogs – everything we have,” Matt said. Emergency crews responded to Boston’s Deer Island on Memorial Day after they received reports that an out-of-service windmill had broken free and was spinning out of control.Responders were able to halt the windmill’s uncontrolled spin just before 3:30 p.m., hours after the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority said a hiker “noticed one of the two wind turbines had something hanging from one of the blades.”“They called 911 and MWRA staff and emergency personnel responded,” a MWRA spokesperson said in a release.The wind turbine, which is on MWRA’s property, has been out of service for more than a year due to a mechanical problem and should have been locked in place, according to the release. Former Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse has reached an agreement to become the next bench boss of the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.In April 2023, Nurse, 55, was fired by the Raptors after five seasons as their head coach. TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index ticked upwards Monday, with broad-based gains led by battery metals and energy stock as U.S. markets were closed for a long weekend south of the border. The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 47.64 points at 19,967.95.
