LOS ANGELES — At halftime, David Adelman showed the pupils a video clip.Julian Strawther, the rising star of the Nuggets’ preseason, drained a 3-pointer then drifted off for a fraction of a second. So did his teammates. Russell Westbrook, still a Tasmanian devil of a basketball player at 34, raced up the floor and found Kawhi Leonard for a three.“That’s inexcusable, even playing 2K your whole life,” Adelman said after a 116-102 loss, pointing out that most of the young Nuggets who played Tuesday grew up on the NBA video game — and that Strawther and company have probably even played against a computer version of Russ.“Westbrook’s in his 17th year. Get back,” Adelman said. “These are things that they have to go through live, and see it.”Denver’s penultimate preseason game might have been the most valuable one yet in terms of the eye-opening reps the Nuggets assistant coach feels are necessary for inexperienced pl...

Jordan’s speaker bid on the brink amid steep GOP opposition

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:44:49 GMT

(CNN) — Rep. Jim Jordan&#’;s speaker bid is in peril as the Ohio Republican confronts steep opposition from members of his own party, raising serious questions over whether he can flip enough holdouts to win the gavel. The House is slated to hold a second speaker vote Wednesday in what could be a pivotal moment for Jordan&#’;s candidacy. An initial round of voting on Tuesday resulted in 20 Republicans voting against Jordan, far more than the handful he could afford to lose given the GOP&#’;s narrow majority. As pressure grows on Republicans to find a way out of the leadership crisis, some have pushed for expanding the powers of the interim speaker, Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina. Republicans are discussing the possibility of bringing forward a resolution to empower McHenry as soon as Wednesday afternoon, two sources told CNN. By Jack Jeffrey and Samy Magdy | Associated PressCAIRO — As desperate Palestinians in sealed-off Gaza try to find refuge under Israel’s relentless bombardment in retaliation for Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 attack, some ask why neighboring Egypt and Jordan don’t take them in.The two countries, which flank Israel on opposite sides and share borders with Gaza and the occupied West Bank, respectively, have replied with a staunch refusal. Jordan already has a large Palestinian population.Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi made his toughest remarks yet on Wednesday, saying the current war was not just aimed at fighting Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, “but also an attempt to push the civilian inhabitants to … migrate to Egypt.” He warned this could wreck peace in the region.Jordan’s King Abdullah II gave a similar message a day earlier, saying, “No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt.”Their refusal is rooted in fear that Israel w...

We’re going to learn a lot about the three teams that have separated themselves from the pack in the NFC in a quest to represent the conference in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. The 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles seemed destined to cruise into their Dec. 3 matchup in South Philly as Nos. 1 and 2 to decide home-field advantage for the conference. Instead, both teams lost unexpectedly — with Cleveland beating up on the 49ers 19-17 and the Eagles getting a similar treatment 20-14 courtesy of the New York Jets.Detroit, meanwhile, easily dismantled Tampa Bay 20-6 and it’s starting to look as if the preseason talk about the Lions’ first playoff berth since 2016 undersold them. Detroit may even be good enough to win their first postseason game since 1991, having lost eight wild card games between that season and ’16.Here’s a look at how the NFC is aligned in terms of playoff seeding heading into Week 7:1. 49ERS (5-1): As the 49ers dominated all comers on t...
